The Cultch is committed to pursuing a comprehensive program to “Green The Cultch” over coming years with the aim of making our building an example of 21st century best environmental practice.

We feel it is the role of the arts to engage with and respond to the world in which it exists. We want to set an example of what can be done to reduce energy and water consumption and to show that renewable energy alternatives are relevant to many situations.

Some of the activities we are taking towards this goal are material reuse and recycling, use of locally produced products, energy-efficient design and reduced all (potable) water use.

CURRENT ACTIVITY:

Across The Cultch we are making a number of behaviour changes:

  • Greater care is being taken is energy consumption.
  • We decide what we can and cannot purchase based on responsible environmental sustainability (RES).
  • We aim to recycle and compost all that we can.
  • Our new cafe/winebar will feature locally sourced ingredients from suppliers practicing organic gardening.
  • We are members of Modo: The Car Co-op, which means that because we share cars, there are fewer cars on the road. Fewer cars on the road means fewer greenhouse gas emissions and less traffic in our city.
  • 9 out of 12 full time employees use alternate transportation.

We are in the final stages of pursuing a silver LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. LEED certification is a voluntary US-based standard for environmental design, and The Cultch will be one of the first LEED certified arts centres in Canada.  We also hope to establish the RES program to help educate the community within and around The Cultch about solutions we can all use to reduce our carbon footprints.
