The Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra (Vancouver)
With members of Little Giant Chinese Chamber Orchestra
Chih-Sheng Chen, conductor

Saturday’s Festival concert marks the culmination of a major international collaboration undertaken by the Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra with Little Giant Chinese Chamber Orchestra. Part 1 of this project saw the VICO Tentet and members of LgCCO performing at two prestigious festivals in Taiwan and South Korea in early April 2024; now in Part 2, the VICO hosts LgCCO in Vancouver and will present its touring repertoire to the hometown crowd! We are proud to showcase a programme jam-packed with Canadian composers, including Rita UedaFarshid SamandariMoshe DenburgJin Zhang, and Lan Tung.

The Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra, founded in 2001, was one of the world’s first concert orchestras devoted specifically to performing new intercultural music on a grand scale. It is currently the only professional ensemble of its kind in Canada. Through composition, performance and educational outreach to both music professionals and the general public, the VICO supports the development of Canadian composers and musicians of diverse backgrounds (including Chinese, Taiwanese, Japanese, Indian, Persian (Iranian), Latin and South American, Vietnamese, North American and European), and fosters the creation of musical works that fuse and transcend cultural traditions. The ensemble includes Western strings and winds (violin, viola, cello, contrabass, oboe, flute, clarinet) alongside Chinese erhu, sanxian, zheng, and sheng/suona; Persian kamanche, tar/setar, and tombak; Vietnamese dan bau; percussion from many world music traditions; and a variety of other instruments as required. Since repertoire for the VICO’s unusual and diverse instrumentation does not already exist, creating new work is an integral component of all our programming. Developing new commissions (over 75 new Canadian works since 2001, and counting!) provides a necessary framework for bringing musicians and composers together to learn from each other, in a uniquely collaborative process. We build bridges of imagination. We approach diversity as a fascinating challenge and a creative call to action. We create and perform music that transcends borders and breaks down barriers, modeling a pathway for integrating non-Western traditional instruments, sounds and techniques into contemporary Canadian classical music. https://www.vi-co.org

Chih-Sheng Chen (guest conductor) is active on the international stage as a conductor, educator, and arts administrator, crossing between the disciplines of Chinese music, cross-cultural music, and contemporary music, in both orchestral and chamber music settings. Chen founded the Little Giant Chinese Chamber Orchestra (LGCCO) in Taiwan in 2000. He has produced/conducted close to one thousand concerts, including the LGCCO’s national and international tours and a full season at the most prestigious venues in Taiwan. He has been a guest conductor in the Netherlands, Singapore, Canada, United States, and China. Chen holds a master degree in conducting from Taiwan’s Fu Jen Catholic University.

About the Festival

About the Festival

The Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra’s Global Soundscapes Festival presents four days of adventurous classical and world music – a rich feast of sounds & rhythms from Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and Canada. Festival concerts will showcase outstanding local musicians alongside acclaimed national and international guest ensembles.

Featured acts include Vancouver’s own Zeellia (Slavic soul music), Borderland (Indian + Persian traditional instruments), the BC Chinese Music Ensemble, and the Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra; Montreal’s Mativetsky, Amiri & Pagé (tabla, santur & harp), and Taiwan’s Little Giant Chinese Chamber Orchestra (conducted by Chih-Sheng Chen).

In the intimate atmosphere of the Historic Theatre at the Cultch, audiences can expect to see and hear many virtuoso performers playing instruments from different cultures, rarely seen together on the same stage. The Festival offers a beautifully diverse sound palette and a range of innovative, inspiring approaches to making music that transcends borders.
