Including everything from Grammy Award-winning musicians to emerging poets, razor sharp economists to visionary environmental warriors, as well as literary dialogues, intellectual debates, musical performances, and interactive culinary experiences.

e-Volver Festival

June 18–27 , 2020
A live and digital performance series to replace the cancelled rEvolver Festival. Premiering a series of nine performances by local and national emerging to mid career solo performers and interdisciplinary companies—including Todd Simmon’s interactive Dj set inspired by Jamaican Sound System culture, Selective Memory. e-Volver will expressly reflect on the time we are living in now by exploring technology and non-traditional platforms for performing arts. BIG news for anyone who missed the sold out run of BIG Sister this season – you can now rent it and stream it from home! BIG Sister explores a world of evil siblings, fat shaming, and unlikely collaboration. This video is from the sold-out run at the Vancity Culture Lab in February 2020.

Dakha Brakha

Ukrainian avant-folk quartet are streaming an archival live set from Pickathon in 2018. We loved them at the York Theatre in 2016 and can’t wait to re-live their musical magic.

Betroffenheit

Marquee.tv is offering free trials to experience their archive of dance, opera, and theatre productions—including the critically-acclaimed, award-winning, smash-hit, dance/theatre hybrid Betroffenheit. Created by the incomparable Jonathon Young (who you may remember from Infinity in the 19/20 Season), based on his own experience with personal tragedy, alongside internationally acclaimed Vancouver choreographer Crystal Pite.

Goodness in Rwanda

A compelling documentary about Volcano Theatre’s tour of Goodness, the award winning play about genocide, in Rwanda. We have been proud to present incredible works from Volcano on our stages, including Infinity, Century Song, and The Four Horsemen Project. You may also remember Goodness from the 2008 Vancouver at Magnetic North Theatre Festival.

The hilarious Colin Mochrie recently went on a blind date with the one and only Mimi. Who could forget Mimi, aka the saucy French clown, from the unforgettable show Blind Date — it’s a staff favourite around here! Now you have a chance to eavesdrop on Mimi’s latest dates from your own home.

Ali McGregor’s Late-Nite Variety-Nite Night

Songs, stories, and lots of laughs. This is the first online version of the cult Melbourne Comedy Festival Variety Show that has been running for 14 years. Beloved Aussie Cabaret performer and opera singer Ali McGregor is bringing some of Australia’s most incredible cabaret performers into your living rooms.

WITH ME

Local filmmaker and theatre artist Josh Epstein’s recent Instagram short film festival featured three short films matched with three charities—and we were so grateful to be one of them. His short film ‘With Me’ is inspired by the musical “Are we Cool Now” (which you may remember from our 2015/16 Season) and is a must-see for all Dan Mangan fans!

 

Frank Turner

Accessible folk-punk artist Frank Turner, formerly from punk band Million Dead, is doing streamed solo shows weekly to raise money for independent live music venues, choosing a different venue for each show. Recommended songs: Recovery, Get Better, and Be More Kind.

Opera Philadelphia’s Sky on Swings

Hannah Moscovitch, who you’ll know as the playwright from last season’s Infinity, wrote the Libretto for Sky On Swings—which you can now watch as part of Opera Philadelphia’s Digital Festival O. She is one of our greatest Canadian playwrights and it’s exciting to see different varieties of her work.
