Known for his stand out involvement in groups such as Steps Ahead, the Mingus Band and the Maria Schneider Orchestra, Grammy-nominated jazz saxophonist Donny McCaslin made music headlines most recently when he and his group were chosen to back David Bowie’s final album, Blackstar (stylised as ?), released on Bowie’s 69th birthday and just two days before he died. Known for his superb musicianship and acrobatic phrasing, McCaslin’s work often blurs the line between jazz and electronica, delving into fusion, angular post-bop, polyphonic funk and ethereal balladry – the perfect jazz musician for a Bowie collaboration.
To quote Bowie himself in a conversation with McCaslin while recording Blackstar
I don’t know what’s going to come of this, but let’s have some fun.”
