Ruby & Smith – www.rubyandsmith.com
Vancouver’s First Lady and Duke of Uke, Daphne Roubini and Andrew Smith are Ukulele Jazz/Folk Balladeers. With her captivating voice and their ukulele skills, together they’ve wowed crowds at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, Vancouver Jazz Fest and Mission Folk Fest, in addition to delighting audiences across Canada and their native UK.
As the founders of Ruby’s Ukes, the World’s largest Ukulele School outside Hawaii, they’re at the forefront of the new generation of performers. They will be performing an enchanting set, bringing their unique Ukulele magic to the York Theatre.
They will be joined by special guests, Vancouver music scene stalwarts, Timothy Tweedale and Patrick Metzger.
“Evocative vocalist Daphne Roubini sounds at once retro – think Billie Holiday and Madeleine Peyroux – and yet cheekily modern and on trend.”
– Georgia Mancio, Artistic Director and founder, ReVoice! Festival, London, UK.
“The two uke aces have crafted a jazz-dusted record made for hanging out on a ramshackle porch in Louisiana at sundown, a mint julep in one hand as the fireflies hover in the forest.”
– Mike Usinger, The Georgia Straight
“A serious ukulele album of accomplished and smooth jazzy-blues which also demonstrates that Daphne Roubini has a marvelous voice.”
– Jonathon Aird, Americana UK
“Instantly captivating, Ruby & Smith ooze charm with their stripped down approach to jazz/folk balladeering.”
– Robert Collins, CTV Vancouver
Ruby’s Ukulele Orchestra – www.rubysukes.ca
The Ruby’s Ukulele Orchestra is a 70 piece Ukulele Orchestra with heart, soul, vision, diversity and style. After their very successful debut show this Summer, this new addition to the Vancouver Ukulele Scene will inspire, enliven, and entice you gently into the amazing world of Ukulele that is taking the world by storm. Ruby had a dream in 2009, when she started Ruby’s Ukes Ukulele School, that one day she would set up a Ukulele Orchestra. In meeting arranger and conductor Timothy Tweedale in September 2015 her dream was realized. Performing a repertoire from David Bowie to Bizet’s Opera Carmen this is a project with energy and raw talent. Each of the members of the Orchestra started playing the Ukulele at Ruby’s Ukes and are a testament to the power of beautiful music made simply.
