Works by Mia Weinberg
Playwrights sometimes describe creating characters in their imaginations, then letting the play “write itself” as they discover what their characters say and do. As a painter, I explore textures and colours, then gradually see what environments, stories and characters emerge. I have found that by working at a small scale, textures become features in their own right: another “character” in the telling of the stories. In my paintings, there is a recurring quality of crossing into liminal spaces, encountering challenges and finding sources of resilience to meet them. When there is darkness or the unknown in my paintings, it is matched by a spirit of adventure.
For many years my practice involved creating art from botanical fragments, using a digital scanner to call attention to the tiny delicate details that reside in the groves, gardens and architectures of often unseen corners of nature. Now I am continuing my love affair with my scanner, creating larger prints from my small paintings to reveal the delightfully unexpected visual surprises within each work. The paintings contain marvelous little worlds. The digital prints are not simply enlargements of these images—they succeed on their own unique terms.
All the original paintings are available for sale. If you would like to purchase a print, please contact me to discuss size and mounting options or to arrange a studio visit.
