I am interested in visual images as traces of thought that betray those mechanisms that allow us to generate internal and external representations of the world. Representational images allow us to reflect not only on how we attend to the world, but also how we categorize and conceptualize every unique moment of embodied life. At the root of my practise is an epistemological position where subjects and objects are considered mutually constructive. As subjects, we read into the world and ignore variation to focus on the abstract and quintessential aspects of objects; these aspects are as much a function of our imagination as they are of the world independent of us.

At the core of my practise is an examination of the relation between humanity (in particular brains and mental processes) and computational systems that we increasingly use to model and extend our intellectual capacities. I am interested in an examination of the technical and cultural implications of seeing ourselves through the lens of computation as we increasingly offload ‘intelligent’ tasks to machines.

In some of my recent work, machines learn from cultural artifacts rather than embodied sensory information. These artifacts are cultural products through which we understand the world and ourselves. In deconstructing, categorizing, predicting and reconstructing cultural artifacts, I emphasize the tension between subjects and objects. The machine is both an alien subject attempting to understand our culture and a cultural object that manifests our understanding of ourselves.

Jessica Craig is an emerging Canadian Artist. There education and work background is in Sociology, Nursing and advocacy giving depth of inspiration and critical inquiry within the work. “My roots growing up in a Canadian-Colombian household inspire my use of colours and language for art expression. My eccentric mark making and use of varying mediums is inspired to capture emotional and societal dichotomies that exist within ourselves, socially and environmentally.”

“My practice is focused on painting and drawing, with an interest in exploring the intersection of the beautiful and the grotesque. After acquiring a foundation in classical painting in my early years, I attended Langara College’s Fine Arts program and completed my BFA at Emily Carr University.

Throughout my practice, I have taken unusual angles on the classical subject of still life, focusing mainly on the detritus of food preparation rather than the prized objects showcased in the Dutch still lifes that continue to inspire me. Created primarily in oils, my paintings monumentalize and enrich this overlooked everyday debris with sumptuous, bold colours, referencing the intensity of Caravaggio and the luminous detail of Mary Pratt. My work transforms the mundane, relishing its detail and its drama, and in the process animates it with unexpected vitality. Commonplace foodstuffs become landscape, portrait, or strangely unrecognizable presences. I hope that these depictions give the viewer pause to appreciate the surreal qualities of everyday life.”

Laurel Swenson

As both a painter and a Registered Clinical Counsellor, Laurel works with the emotional landscape.

She abstracts both the tangle of our emotional storms and our calm inner seas into paint, colour, pencil and charcoal marks and, of course, texture. Laurel’s paintings are most known for their rich textures, expressive marks, and use of colour. She is particularly interested in the themes of transition, struggle and growth, and is inspired by human development, psychology, and her experience working in her role as a counselling therapist in private practice. Laurel’s paintings celebrate the value of struggle in our very human lives.

Laurel is a Vancouver-based abstract painter with a studio in the big, old warehouse building chock-full of artists called the Parker Street Studios. She attended SFU’s School for the Contemporary Arts and Emily Carr, and has a history as an internationally shown experimental video artist whom received Canada Council for the Arts support for multiple video projects over her video art career. Laurel now focuses her creative practice on painting alongside her rewarding and in-demand private counselling practice. Her work is collected internationally.
