Hello my name is Chris MacDonald: Sales Manager of The Cultch

‘Hello My Name Is…’ is a new profile series on The Cultch blog. Each post will feature a staff member, volunteer, subscriber, or community mover and shaker. Stay tuned for upcoming photos and interviews and drop us a line at ricky@thecultch.com if you have a burning question for one of our staff members or volunteers!

With single tickets on sale right now we thought it would be a good opportunity to spotlight our sales manager Chris MacDonald and ask him about our 40th season!

Q: Hi! What’s your name and what do you do at The Cultch?

Hi everyone! My name’s Chris MacDonald and I am the Sales Manager here at The Cultch. I’m the man behind the phone!

Q: What’s a typical day like as the Sales Manager of The Cultch?

I usually get into the office in the afternoon and basically hit the phones.  Depending on the time of the year my day duties vary from selling single tickets, subscriptions, group packages, program ads, or a combination of all of the above! My favourite moments during my job pop up when I’m able to engage in conversations with single ticket buyers and explain to them why they should come to our venue on a more frequent basis.

Q: Can you describe the most memorable phone conversation you’ve ever had as the sales manager?

That’s a hard one. I would say the most memorable conversation I had was when I called a patron who had actually performed at The Cultch many years ago. Even without meeting him in person, I could tell that this patron was truly passionate about theatre. There was a youthful energy and light that emanated from this patron’s voice when we talked about the shows that he had been a part of. It was one of the most enjoyable conversations I think I have ever had.

Q: Tell us about The Cultch’s upcoming season. What shows from the 13/14 season are patrons responding to the most?

One interesting thing to note about our 13/14 season is that it’s a truly an equal balance of theatre, music, and dance. Also, It’s a total treat to have some of our most favored performers (Ronnie Burkett) coming back for our 40th anniversary!

In regards to the show that’s getting the most response, I would say it’s a toss up between Cabaret Brise-Jour and The God That Comes. These shows are definitely going to be selling out.

Q: Favourite show you’ve ever seen at The Cultch?

L,Orchestre d’Hommes – Orchestres Performs Tom Waits. It’s a fascinating show and all of the performers are great musicians who have chosen to present their talents in a really creative and new way. Not only were they amazing musicians, but the theatricality of it was stunning. Taking non musical instruments and making music out of them. It was vocally uncanny how close were to Tom Waits. If I had known how good it was I would have seen it not once but three times. When they (Cabaret Brise-Jour) come back this season, the show is going to take off like wildfire. The visuals are great and I would recommend it as one of the shows to watch if you are buying a Choose 5 or Choose 8 package.

Q: There are 19 shows this season. What are some tips you can share for people interested in picking 5 or 8 shows for a subscription package?

Be adventurous and try a cross section of theatre, music, and dance shows and remember that subscriber have unlimited exchanges.

A big thank you to Chris for giving us the scoop on his favourite shows and his take on the upcoming season!
