Music Monday: The Songs of East Van Panto

Check out all the songs given an East Van spin in this year’s East Van Panto: Wizard of Oz. Musical Director, and composer, Veda Hille is infamous for taking some of the most (and least) popular songs of recent decades and flipping them on their heads with new arrangements and lyrics to add a little pizzazz to Theatre Replacement’s winter tradition. Take a listen to the original songs that have inspired the music of this year’s Panto soundtrack, then come hear our versions at the York Theatre! It’s almost here! Theatre Replacement’s East Van Panto: Snow White & the Seven Dwarves opens Friday, December 1 in the York Theatre! We can hardly wait!

Vancouver is buzzing with Panto fever! Check out some of the amazing press coverage to answer all of your Panto questions:

  • Have you ever wanted to know how Theatre Replacement decided to start doing the East Van Panto?

“The whole thing came from wanting to make something our kids would want to watch,” say James Long. You can read more about it in his interview with Artslandia.

  • Have you ever wondered how they come up with the quirky music?

In this Georgia Straight Interview, Veda Hille say, “It has to be a song everybody knows and loves; it has to fit in the right place in the arc of the piece; it has to have a good pun in the main title or chorus of the song that suits the script.”

  • Have you ever wondered why it is so gosh darned hilarious to make fun of East Van?

“What is theatre but a mirror – a magic mirror on the wall, if you will…We go to the theatre to learn about ourselves and laugh at ourselves. When you have a place as unique and as interesting as East Vancouver, or Vancouver proper, there’s so much material there to draw upon.” Says Ming Hudson, in this Westender article. “Snow White gets Panto treatment” – The Province

  • Have you ever wanted to know how they keep coming up with such great shows?

Writer, Mark Chavez, says, “…Anita and I are surrounded by very a very smart, creative group of people who all want to make this show as funny and ridiculous and beautiful as it can be.

You may have seen this article in either the The Vancouver Sun or The Province!

  • Or, have you ever wondered what the writer of the Panto’s dream job was as a child?

Panto Season is Upon us Again! – East Van Panto: Little Red Riding Hood

panto_2016_106

It’s that time of year again! It’s time for another great Panto presented by Theatre Replacement’s East Van Panto! Now in its  fourth year, the Panto is one of our favourite traditions here at The Cultch. If you have never been to the Panto, this is your chance to start your own holiday tradition!

But what is Panto, you say?

We are so glad you asked!

East Van Panto says it best:

Panto (another name for Pantomime) is a tradition of holiday musical comedy theatre. Popularized in England in the early 19thCentury, Pantomime takes familiar fairy tales and injects music, contemporary references, and audience participation to create raucous, noisy entertainment that’s fun for everyone in the family. Our Panto takes inspiration from this classic form, but adds a uniquely East Van twist; a new, local tradition you and your family are invited to make your own!

The story in the spotlight this year is Little Red Riding Hood. Join Little Red for a wacky and wild ride down the Adanac bike trail. All your favourite characters are here -Little Red, Granny, The Big Bad Wolf…even a few you won’t expect. Recommended as one of the 10 Vancouver comedy events to check out in November, The East Van Panto promises big laughs for the whole family. For a taste of the fun, check out Mark Chavez’ video interview with Vancouver Sun’s Frances Georgian.
