Just because we can’t gather in person for the Panto doesn’t mean you can’t have fun and participate like you would in the theatre. Make the most out of your Panto at home viewing this year—download (and print if you’d like) the activities and sing-along sheets below to enhance your Panto Come Home! experience.
This season, local favourite Tetsuro Shigematsu hosts a brand new Cultch podcast! Before he created some of your favourite shows (Empire of the Son, 1 Hour Photo, and Kuroko) Tetsuro was the host of CBC Radio One’s former afternoon series The Roundup. His experiences as an artist, writer, performer, and broadcaster make him the perfect host to have in-depth conversations with a variety of artists from our season.
Episode #5
with past Panto Kids!
Episode #6
with Panto Kids veterans, Mela & Maxine
In what feels like another life as a performance curator, many of my days were spent researching work by going out and seeing it at events and festivals both here and around the world. Since March, we’ve all been grounded. It’s my fingers doing the walking, scrolling endlessly from my own living room.
Whether we’ve adjusted to Zoom or not, we must be physically isolated for the moment and it’s the virtual that is bringing us together. In our isolation, we need strategies to overcome our collective grief, to be reminded that we are not alone in what we are experiencing. Here are some gems I’ve come across that remind me how together we truly are and what is possible to accomplish with that in mind

Welcome to the 8th edition of the East Van Panto—reimagined!
After years of celebrating the holidays at the East Van Panto with all of you, we couldn’t possibly get through this difficult year without it. The Cultch and Theatre Replacement (T/R) are so grateful to be a part of your holiday celebrations, especially this year when gatherings will look so different. We all need a really good laugh and a lot more joy and as you know that is what the Panto brings us all! Thank you for welcoming us into your living rooms, virtual family gatherings, and hearts this holiday season!
When the Panto first started, the incredible team at T/R and The Cultch had no idea what to expect but we threw our hearts and souls into the project year after year. Never did we imagine a Panto like this one but we did it! I am so proud of the Panto team for all they have done to make this year’s show a reality. They are reinventing how we do things and making magic happen so we can again share the good Panto feelings with our loved ones and our community.
It has been such an honour to watch this holiday tradition grow, reaching more and more people every year. Livestreaming the Panto online means your family and friends across the country and all over the world can join you and us for a holiday celebration. If you have not yet reached out to those that are dear to you across the country and the world then do it now and share with them your cherished holiday tradition.
A huge thank you to our amazing Panto sponsors West Coast Reduction, D&H Group LLP, Averra Developments, Mark and Oonagh Pontin, Westbank/Crombie REIT, McMedia Audio Visual, and Recycling Alternative, their generous support has made this year’s show even more magical.
Our 2020/21 Season has just begun! Thanks to each and every one of you who have supported us as a subscriber or donor these last few months. Your support means we are able to continue to bring you amazing virtual programming in the new year. The 2021 3-box subscription packages will be available soon and, like this Fall, we are committed to bringing the best of The Cultch directly to you, no matter what happens. We can’t wait for you to join us in 2021!
Have a wonderful holiday season. Our wish for you is that you are able to connect with those you love in any way you can. Happy New Year. May it be filled with peace and good health for everyone.
Warm virtual Hugs,
Heather Redfern
For the last seven years, the word ‘joy’ has been a touchstone for Theatre Replacement as we put together our beloved Panto. It is something that we ask our company to focus on, even when the days are long and the work is hard. Every year, we try our absolute best to bring you a show that is bursting with joy.
Panto Come Home! is certainly full of joy—and it is our sincere hope that it will make you laugh and cheer—but for this particular production, there is another word that feels more central: care.
Over the last six months, we’ve proceeded with caution, slowly building up a culture of care, changing course whenever it was necessary to keep each other safe.
Sometimes, this has required separation. We had to make the difficult decision to not include our Panto Kids this year (miss you guys!). Likewise, we had to ask our Studio 58 students not to join us (Sarvin, Jacob, Tanner, and Sabrina—we know you would have been brilliant!). Our cast is performing beneath masks and our orchestra is playing behind plexiglass. And, of course, you are watching from the safety of your own homes.
Care has also meant slowing things down, looking for the beauty in what is simple, and discovering the power of adaptation.
We are so proud of this show, and so grateful to our partners at The Cultch for standing by the project so steadfastly during this period of profound uncertainty. Above all, we are grateful to this amazing company of artists, stage managers, designers, and technicians who have taught us that, even when times are at their toughest, if we take care for each other then, together, we will find a way.
Thank you for being with us. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Lonely no more
This is the story of a widowed elephant and the monumental effort to relocate and create community. It ends with a serenade from Cher. Not a spoiler but get your tissues ready!

Everything is connected: this is a foundational tenet shared by spiritual thought from around the world and particularly in Indigenous worldview. We have a lot to learn from trees and forests right in our backyard.

Future visions
I’m approaching middle age and I’m good with it. I’m inspired to be in a place where I have as many people to look up to that are older than me as those that are younger. I was reminded of this when I attended a talk (online!) recently with Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh (aka MST) matriarchs, knowledge-keepers, and artists across generations.
Follow the #MSTfuturism conversation on Instagram, a movement to uplift and celebrate Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh visions for the future of what is currently known as Vancouver.

Dear Cultch Pen Pals:
Here we are, at the end of a year truly like no other.
We’ve experienced the pandemic together these past few months through our collective experience of The Cultch’s subscription box series, a beautiful experiment and an exercise of generosity and care that I know we all felt deeply. What a gift!
When I think back to this time, I’ll remember what it meant to gather with you to witness live performance in a virtual space. We helped each other get through this. When we’re able to physically gather again, live performance will have a whole new meaning.
Over the holidays, I wish we could gather around a fire. Instead we have our screens, or this.
My offering this box is something for you to keep for yourself – writing prompts to set intentions for the year ahead.
Complete these seven sentences with the first thing that comes to your mind:
I will learn how to…
I will start…
I will stop…
When we’re all vaccinated, the first place I will travel to is…
I will find…
I will try…
I will be more…
If you’re willing to share, what is ONE WORD that you’d share from above?
For me, my word is FUN. These past months have had moments of joy, but what I really want is more fun.
Important note: if you’d like us to write you back please provide your mailing address :-)
Warmest,
Joyce Rosario
