In 2019, The Cultch launched the Digital Storytelling Project to encourage and enable theatre artists to create digital transmedia components for their onstage works. These early experiments with new technologies positioned The Cultch and its community of artists to be leaders in digital performing arts during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since 2020, The Cultch has presented, produced, co-produced, and supported the creation of over 50 online performances including: Do You Want What I Have Got?: A Craigslist Cantata (Veda Hille, Amiel Gladstone and Bill Richardson), numerous East Van Pantos (Theatre Replacement), TRANSFORM Festival (Urban Ink), Clean/Espejos (Neworld Theatre), The Cafe (Aphotic Theatre/Itsazoo), The Boy In The Moon(Neworld), We The Same (Ruby Slippers), Mx (Lili Robinson), Clean/Espejos (Neworld Theatre), and Meditation (Amber Barton).
The Cultch will always be a home for innovative artists with social impact, both on stage and online. We imagine an arts ecosystem where online and in-person performances live side by side. We’re committed to bringing the voices and vision of the artists we present on our stages to audiences around the world. By providing the resources, mentorship, and platform to explore new ways of storytelling, we support artists to adapt and film performances for online presentation.

The Cultch is excited to launch a pilot project to move digital theatre forward with a national working group. With funding from the Canada Council for the Arts Strategic Innovation Fund, we established a partnership between Urban Ink, Prairie Theatre Exchange, Neworld Theatre, Theatre Replacement, Eastern Front Theatre, and Theatre Passe Muraille.
Digital theatre is still an emerging artform and therefore needs new business models. Bringing together those creating and producing online performances, we aim to expand the digital reach of presenters and producers (and thus artists) making it easier for them to connect with audiences beyond their regions.
