About

For one night only, celebrated Palestinian poet, spoken word artist, human rights activist and academic Rafeef Ziadah will be joined by virtuoso oud player Mouhannad El-E’ek and local sensation Dafa band for a landmark evening of power though performance for the benefit of Gaza aid.

Named after her now-iconic poem by the same title, “We Teach Life” is Ziadah’s unabashedly powerful performance of resilience in the face of impunity and injustice.

The event will also feature numerous local artists and vendors whose exquisite work will be on sale to support this fundraiser for Gaza.

The words that she says with such beauty and grace hit you right in the heart. They are more powerful than any weapon.” Scholar and Civil Rights activist Angela Davis

Rafeef ’s poetry demands to be heard. She is powerful, emotional and political. Please read her work and see her perform. You cannot then be indifferent to the Palestinian cause” ~Filmmaker and Director Ken Loach

Rafeef Ziadah is a Palestinian spoken word artist, human rights activist and academic based in London, UK. Her powerful performances, including We Teach Life, Sir and Shades of Anger, have captivated audiences worldwide, blending poetry and music to tackle themes of war, exile, racism and resistance. She has headlined venues far and wide, including the Abbey Theatre in Dublin, the Lyric Theatre in Belfast, and stages from Barcelona and Madrid to Sydney and Melbourne. Rafeef has released three spoken word albums, including “Three Generations,” “We Teach Life,” and “Hadeel.” Beyond performance, she conducts workshops to empower expression through poetry. A passionate advocate for justice, she was chosen to represent Palestine at the Southbank Centre Poets Olympiad.

Dafa Band (@dafa.band), inspired by the Arabic word for “warmth,” embodies the essence of Middle Eastern culture through their soul-stirring music. With a profound connection to the past and present they weave melodies that transcend language barriers, touching hearts even if one doesn’t comprehend the lyrics. Dafa Band’s unique ability to ignite the spirit of warmth in their melodies makes them a true gem in the world of Middle Eastern music.

Mouhannad El E’ek (@oud.vancouver) is a virtuoso Syrian oud player with over 13 years of experience playing the mesmerizing instrument at concerts and across the Levant until his recent arrival to Vancouver. He is distinguished by his unique playing style and ability to express deep emotions through music. Performed at numerous concerts and private events in Syria and Lebanon.
