In a special Vancouver performance, the Borealis String Quartet performs an intimate and introspective evening of chamber music combining music with animation.
It features the premiere of Vancouver composer, Farshid Samandari’s string quartet no. ii, [beyond] self-hell. Receiving inspiration from the book Self Hell by Vancouver author Sarvenaz Amanat, this new commission combines music with animation to portray the transition from negative to positive emotions in this exploration of mental health. Continuing the interaction of music with animation, Owrsi by composer, Nader Adabnejad explores the beautiful colours of light portrayed through intricate Persian glass windows. Mendelssohn’s emotive and deeply personal String Quartet in F minor, Op. 80 rounds out the program. Written shortly before his death, this powerful piece expresses deep feelings of pain and loss following the death of his sister and closest confidant Fanny Hansel Mendelssohn earlier that same year.
